  24.         - A 286 at 12Mhz. SI rating 15.3 Landmark rating 15.1
  25.         - 4 MB of RAM
  26.         - 66MB 25ms 1:1 interleave hard drive (should tr. at >400Kbytes/sec)
  27.         - VGA 640x480 and 16 colors.
  28.         - 1.2 Mb floppy, 2 serial, 1 parallel, real time clock etc.
  29.         - 2400 bps modem (no advantage here)
  30.         - 8 expansion slots (4 available).
  31.         - runs multiple DOS sessions under desqview.

  40.         Yes, but do you have MIDI ?  Just kidding.  I certainly do stand
  41. corrected about my presumptions concerning the Atari MegaST being more
  42. powerful for the price than any comparible computer.  I'm afraid all I can
  43. plead is ignorance.  I had no idea the price of 286 computers had dropped to
  44. such a reasonable level.  It's a welcome development, even though I am somewhat
  45. of an Atari loyalist (because I liked their philosophy or not ripping the
  46. consumer off every chance they get).  It seems that I have fallen behind, and
  47. times are changing rapidly.  Atari has done a couple of things recently that
  48. may be loosing them some of their loyalty base now.  I like to think I have
  49. an open mind, and I have to admit that factual arguments like yours are very
  50. convincing.  I hope Atari believes enough in PR to refute your (implied) claim
  51. that their power/price ratio is down (with a market announcement that actually
  52. comes true or something), but intuition tells me they won't.  I'll stop here
  53. because I would hate to become an Atari-basher.  I still have hope for them.

  121.         I think most of the people on the net are aware that Atari is
  122. handling the marketing/support situation very poorly in the U.S. probably
  123. because of their European concentration.  Atari is also aware by now of
  124. how we feel, if they even read or care about this notesfile anymore with its
  125. childish sounding bickering.
  126.         I accept that you have Atari's interests at heart, and am glad
  127. you feel it is worth your time to write the long notes (seriously).
  128. However, bringing up MWC'S loss of performance to show that the Atari's
  129. market is going down is redundant.  We already know, and they know it too.
  130. I get to use this net for free, but if I didn't I would probably get upset
  131. about downloading all of the repetitive (Atari-bashing) messages at long-
  132. distance costs.  Some people may not have the extra money to spend.  I don't
  133. have that much extra time to spend, but it is only slightly irritating to skip
  134. them at a couple seconds loss.  I purchased Mark William's C also, and would be
  135. especially interested in an ANSI compiler which I could use at work.  But
  136. a brief announcement that MWC ANSI "C" isn't out would probably have been
  137. sufficient.
  138.         This is my opinion, but I think straight facts will recieve warmer
  139. attention than (few facts)+(gobs of repeat opinions).  That is my official
  140. opinion on opinions :)  You did make some good points, but please let it
  141. rest until there are some hard facts (and then moderate the volume of opinions)
  142.  
  143. BTW, the lines on your messages are too long for most of our screens.  They
  144. wrap around and leave a lot of blank space on the second line.  Please
  145. shorten the width of your window to around 75 or (max) 80 characters,
  146. or increase them to just below 160 for those of us with standard sized windows.

  157. Check this one out:  I was working in the computer/accounting dept
  158. of a major accounting firm in Hartford when what did my eyes spy on
  159. the desk of every administrator in the firm?  A big enevelope from
  160. Atari Corp!  Enclosed was a very detailed explanation and description
  161. of the Portfolio in a fold-out type magazine ad along with the 30-day
  162. money back offer.  If Atari can reach into the levels of management far
  163. enough and turn enough enough heads with this little wonder it *may*
  164. just be enough to get some business' to look at the rest of the line.

  214. Well, the STE is only a ST with those additional features you mentioned.
